Location: Washington DC Area (primarily Springfield & Falls Church Virginia) + part time remote

Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Software/System Architect to join our team and contribute to the evolution and modernization of key Department of Defense applications. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, modernizing, implementing, and optimizing the applications for a cloud infrastructure and services. You will collaborate with the application modernization teams, platform development teams, including Software Engineers, DevSecOps Engineers, and Stakeholders, to architect scalable and secure solutions that enable the development and automated deployment of the modernized applications, DevSecOps pipelines and platform.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement system architecture for a suite of high-volume applications and platforms, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance to meet the demands of large-scale data processing.
  • Define system solutions based on user/client needs, cost, and required integration with existing applications, systems, or platforms.
  • Improve speed to impact by sustaining an agile culture, promoting DevSecOps, and building off reusable code.
  • Modernize through increased use of supportable open-source technologies.
  • Transition existing applications to operate in authorized commercial cloud(s) using commercial design patterns and best practices.
  • Select and configure cloud services and tools to support workflows, including data storage and data processing.
  • Enable data integration and high data availability on a big data platform to provide high data quality and enable self-service analytic capability.
  • Develop and implement cloud security and governance frameworks, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Optimize cloud infrastructure and services for cost efficiency, performance, and scalability, while ensuring high availability and fault tolerance.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot cloud-based systems, proactively identifying and resolving performance issues and security vulnerabilities.
  • Collaborate with development teams to integrate pipelines into CI/CD workflows and automate deployment processes.
  • Continually collaborate with all customers and programs to shape solutions, requirements, design, maintenance, and post-deployment upgrades consistent with embedded security and the modern toolkit.
  • Mandate key design principles and the technology stack.
  • Stay up to date with emerging cloud technologies, AI/ML frameworks, and best practices, and recommend their adoption to enhance the platform.
  • Research, identify, and select technology products required for solution delivery.
  • Establish, implement, and document the technology integration or migration strategies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to evaluate and integrate third-party tools and services into the platform architecture.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members, fostering their professional growth and development in cloud architecture and DevSecOps technologies.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Proven experience as a Software/Systems Architect, designing and implementing solutions, preferably in DevSecOps.
  • Strong understanding of cloud computing concepts and technologies, with hands-on experience in at least one major cloud platform (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in infrastructure-as-code (IaC) tools and frameworks like Terraform, CloudFormation, or Deployment Manager.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in containerization technologies and orchestration frameworks such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Strong understanding of cloud security principles and best practices, including identity and access management, data encryption, and network security.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to analyze complex systems and recommend effective solutions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Ability to generate architecture diagrams for all levels to support effective engineering and solutioning, enabling the teams to rapidly and successfully implement and deliver.
  • Relevant certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional or Azure Solutions Architect Expert are a plus.
  • Experience with authorized (e.g., FedRAMP) commercial off-the-shelf offerings is a plus.
  • Stays up to date on the latest trends and new technologies; a desire for continued learning is a must.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work on high-performing teams.

Education Requirements:

  • 10+ years of relevant engineering experience with a B.S. in Engineering, Science, or an equivalent degree, or 20+ years of experience without a degree.

Salary Range:

  • $172,000 – $243,000
